Build a Custom AI Assistant People Actually Use

Maps to: AI Application Builder · Product Manager · Teacher · Founder · Solutions Engineer

You're going to build a real AI assistant for one narrow job, write the instructions that make it nail that job every time, and ship it to 10 real people who actually use it. The surprise is what's hard: not the tech, but scoping the problem tightly enough that the AI gets it right every time, which is the core skill of building with AI. This is the lightest way in to a whole career, and doing one tells you fast whether shaping a tool around a real problem is your kind of work.

How this shows up on a resume or college app

I built and shipped an AI assistant used by 10+ real people, defining a narrow problem precisely, testing edge cases, and deciding what the tool should refuse to do. I learned that the hardest part of building with AI isn't the technology, it's defining the problem precisely enough that the tool gets it right every time.

When you finish, BuildMe drafts your Common App activity description from what you actually built.

The plan

  1. 1

    Step 1

Pick a narrow use case + write why it matters

Pick a real, narrow job for your assistant: a study tool for one class, a helper for a hobby, a tool for a community you're in. Write a short 'why this matters' paragraph. Narrow wins: a tool that does one thing well beats a do-everything bot.

  2. 2

    Step 2

Write the system prompt + test 10 questions

Write the instructions that make the AI do the job, then test it with 10 real questions, including the weird and edge ones. Notice where it gives bad answers and decide what it should refuse. Rewrite the prompt 3 times. (Your first prompt failing half the questions is normal, not failure.)

  3. 3

    Step 3

Ship to 10 people + capture what happens

Publish your assistant and share it with at least 10 real people who'd use it. Capture screenshots of real conversations. Watch for the surprising ways people use (or break) it, and make one improvement.
